Berries, Fruits, and Vegetables

Berries, Fruits, Vegetables, and Alzheimer's

Specific berries, fruits and vegetables have also been shown via randomized clinical trials to enhance cognition in both healthy and cognitively impaired individuals.  At the same time, too much sugar or carbohydrates consumption by eating too many or the wrong kinds of fruits and vegetables could increase your risk of Alzheimer’s.  One observational study found that eating large amounts of fruit and vegetables can increase the risk of Alzheimer’s by 29% if you have an Apoe4 allele and 17% if you are not a carrier.  Based on our discussion regarding sugar and carbohydrates, it is generally best to stick with fruits that have a low glycemic index and vegetables that are not high in carbohydrates.  When possible, it might be good to target fruits and vegetables that have been shown to be protective against Alzheimer’s.1
